“Defying Conditions” written by Rev Mykal J. Amaré

In the song, “Defying Gravity”, from the musical “Wicked”, “Elphaba”, aka wicked witch of the west, is taking a firm stand. Elphaba is tired of following others rules, of being told she can’t do one thing or another because of her color, her social status and just being who she is.

In our own lives, how many limits do we allow others to put on our lives and how many limits to we put on our own lives?

Ernest Holmes states “Never limit your view of life by any past experience.”

Just because we grew up under certain conditions does not mean that we cannot have the good that we each deserve. There is plenty to go around, because the universe has an unlimited supply of good.

I had this belief that because of the economic condition of the family I grew up in, I would never have much of anything in my life. That is not true, I know that now. I also had the belief I would never “be” anything because I was told as a child that “you will not amount to a hill of beans”. That is not true.

We have choice in this life, we can wallow in our “stuff” and keep crying, “woe is me”, being the victim or we can choose to move beyond our conditions. We can reach out and grasp that ‘golden ring’ that is there for each and every one of us. We are born with divine right to all the good that we can accept in our lives. However we first must open to that good, expand our mental equivalence to receive all the Good God has in store for us.

Choice is such a powerful word, such a powerful way to change your life. I invite you to choose to release all the old conditions that are holding you back, holding you down. Rise up and take charge of your life and your destiny. You are the magnificent expression of God here in human form. Make the most of it, this is your life!

I support you in saying yes to your Good right here and right NOW!

Below are some of the lyrics from “Defying Gravity”

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

I’m through accepting limits
”cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I’ll never know!
Too long I’ve been afraid of
Losing love I guess I’ve lost
Well, if that’s love
It comes at much too high a cost!

So if you care to find me
Look to the western sky!
As someone told me lately:
“Everyone deserves the chance to fly!”
And if I’m flying solo
At least I’m flying free
To those who’d ground me
Take a message back from me
Tell them how I am
Defying gravity
I’m flying high
Defying gravity
And soon I’ll match them in renown
And nobody in all of Oz
No Wizard that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!
